Coast Guard searching for missing man near Sanibel Island, Florida

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Coast Guard is searching for a man believed to be in the water after reporting his sail boat capsized late Tuesday.

Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach, Florida, watchstanders received a report via VHF channel 16 from a man stating he was taking on water aboard a 22-foot white sailing vessel one mile west of Sanibel Island Tuesday evening. The unidentified man, reported his boat had capsized before losing all communications with the Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jawkhawk aircraft crew and a Station Fort Myers Beach 29-foot Response Boat-Small boatcrew joined with personnel from Lee County Sheriffs Department and Florida Fish and Wildlife to search for the man.

Search crews are saturating areas in Fort Myers Beach, San Carlos Bay, Caloosahatchee River and Pine Island.

The man is wearing a lifejacket. Anyone with information regarding this case are asked to call the Coast Guard at 727-824-7506 or local police.
