Coast Guard searching for missing man near Ocean Beach, N.Y.

1st Coast Guard District NewsNEW YORK – The Coast Guard is searching for a missing 26-year-old man in the vicinity of Ocean Beach on Long Island, N.Y., Tuesday, July 12, 2011.

Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound watchstanders received a call from a friend of the missing man at approximately 2:45 a.m. The pair had entered the waters around Bayberry Walk for a swim. The missing man is 5’9” and wearing blue and orange swim trunks.

Sector Long Island Sound issued an urgent marine information broadcast on VHF channel 16 and launched a rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Fire Island, N.Y., and a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., to search for the missing man.

Assets from the Suffolk County, N.Y., Police Department are also on scene searching.
