Coast Guard searching for missing man near Charles Island, Conn.

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard and multiple agencies are searching for a man who went missing near Charles Island, Conn., around 4:40 a.m. today.

Michael Krupa, 22, of Middletown, Conn., was kayaking with a friend when their kayaks capsized around 2 a.m. Krupa’s friend managed to swim to a nearby sailboat that was anchored and contacted authorities.

Two rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station New Haven, a Coast Guard Auxiliary boat crew, and first responders from the Milford, West Haven and Stratford Fire Departments are conducting surface searches. A rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod is conducting an aerial search of the area.

“We are currently searching an area five miles long by five miles wide,” said Mark Averill, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound’s watchstander. “Our Station New Haven crews managed to find the kayak this morning, so we have saturated the area with assets in an effort to find the missing kayaker.”

Weather on scene was reported as fifteen mile-per-hour winds, two-foot seas and water temperature of 72 degrees at the time of the incident.
