Coast Guard searching for missing man in Suffolk, Va.

25-foot response boatSUFFOLK, Va. — The Coast Guard is searching for a man in the James River Monday near Holly Acres in Suffolk.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received a call at approximately 1:50 a.m. from the Suffolk Police Department stating a man was in the James River. The man, suspected of DUI, was fleeing Suffolk Police Department officers when he abandoned his vehicle and headed to the James River. A Coast Guard Station Portsmouth 25-Foot Response Boat-Small crew launched at approximately 2 a.m. to assist and a Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched at 2:45 a.m. to join the search.

Police officers plan to launch a skiff to search for the missing man.

A second MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City is scheduled to launch to assist with the search.
