Coast Guard Searching for Missing Man in Connecticut River

New York – New York – The Coast Guard and local Police and Fire Departments are searching for a missing man in the Connecticut River near East Hartford, Conn., after he fell from a 20-foot train bridge while walking with a friend around 4 p.m. today.

The friend ran for help after witnessing the 22-year-old man fall from the bridge and go under the surface as he attempted to swim to shore.

A multi-agency search continues in the area with a rescue crew from Coast Guard Station New London, the East Hartford Police and Fire Department and a Connecticut State Police helicopter.

The water temperature in the area is around 40 degrees.

The Coast Guard urges mariners to keep water temperatures in mind before boating. This time of year can be very dangerous. The snow melting in the mountains drains into the Connecticut River keeping the water temperatures cold even after prolonged periods of warm air temperatures.
