Coast Guard Searching for Missing Kayaker Off of Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The U.S. Coast Guard is assisting local law enforcement agencies in the Santa Barbara area with the search of a missing kayaker. Yesterday afternoon two kayakers fell into the water off of Ferland Point in the Santa Barbara Channel when their kayak capsized. Only one of the two kayakers is known to have made it to shore. The missing person is a 24-year-old man.

Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department searched by helicopter until sunset yesterday and again this morning. A Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and a 47-foot Surf Boat from Station Channel Island Harbor are currently searching the area from Carpenteria to Santa Barbara

The Coast Guard reminds boaters to have the required safety equipment and to exercise good judgment while on the water. Boaters are encouraged to ensure they have properly fitting, Coast Guard approved lifejackets onboard.
