Coast Guard searching for missing kayaker in San Francisco

Coast Guard District 11 NewsSAN FRANCISCO – Coast Guard air and boat crews are searching for a 50-year old man in the water after his kayak capsized near Pier 80 in San Francisco today.

Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received the report from a professional mariner who was mooring a motor vessel near where the kayak capsized.

The call over came in over channel 16, the international hailing and distress channel, at approximately 2:41 p.m., and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco and 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station San Francisco were dispatched to look for the man. Additionally, crews from the Coast Guard Auxiliary, San Francisco Police Department and Fire Department are helping with the search effort.

The man was kayaking with a friend when his kayak flipped. His friend searched for him; however, only his kayak has been found. It is not known if he was wearing a life jacket.
