WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard is searching for a missing 14-year-old after his kayak was found near the Wright Memorial Bridge in Kitty Hawk.
Currituck County 911 dispatchers contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center watchstanders at approximately 7:25 p.m. Friday preorting the teen had borrowed a friend’s kayak at 10 a.m., and at approximately 11 a.m., a kayak was found with a cell phone and fishing gear aboard.
Sector watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and dispatched crews aboard a 25-foot Response Boat – Small from Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City to assist.
Currituck County Sheriff’s Office personnel are assisting in a shoreside search.
The teen was reportedly not wearing a life jacket or shirt and was wearing dark blue denim shorts.
