Coast Guard searching for missing jet skier in Florida Keys

KEY WEST, Fla. – The Coast Guard is searching today for a missing jet skier near Key West.

Derek King, 36, of Key West, reportedly stole the jet ski from Island Watersports at the Westin Key West Resort and Marina where he worked as a mechanic.

Coast Guard Sector Key West search-and-rescue coordinators received a call from Island Watersports personnel at approximately 7:15 p.m. stating King worked there as a mechanic and unexpectedly took off with a jet ski. King was reported to be wearing black clothes and took a blue colored jet ski.

The Coast Guard received a call from a boater at 7:25 p.m. who was approximately 10 miles southwest of Key West reporting they had seen a person on a jet ski who matched King’s description.

The Coast Guard responded immediately by launching a boatcrew from Station Key West and an HU-25 Falcon jet aircrew from Air Station Miami to locate King.

Island Watersports contacted the Key West Police to file a stolen vessel report.

Searches throughout the night have not yielded any results and the Coast Guard is searching for King Tuesday morning with an HC-130 aircrew from Air Station Clearwater, Fla.
