Coast Guard searching for missing fisherman near Smith Point Texas

HOUSTON — The Coast Guard is searching for a man who reportedly went missing while fishing offshore near Smith Point, Tuesday.

Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston received a call from a good Samaritan at approximately 6 p.m., reporting that Thein Nguyen, 42, of Anahuac, did not return from a fishing trip. Nguyen was reported to be aboard a 21-foot White Osprey sport fisher, which left from Chambers County.

Currently searching are:

  • Two MH-65C Dolphin helicopters and crews from Coast Guard Air Station Houston
  • A 25-foot Response Boat-Small and crew from Coast Guard Station Houston
  • A 25-foot Response Boat-Small and crew from Coast Guard Station Galveston

An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) was also issued to mariners as a caution in the area.
