Coast Guard searching for missing fisherman in La Jolla

Sea OtterSAN DIEGO — The Coast Guard is searching for a missing man after the vessel he and four others were in capsized in the surf at Windansea Beach, in La Jolla, Wednesday.

Anyone with any information about the missing or rescued men are asked to contact the Coast Guard’s Joint Harbor Operations Center at 619-278-7033.

At approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego received a report that five men fishing for lobster at Windansea Beach had been caught in the surf after their 25-foot boat capsized. Four fishermen were rescued by lifeguards and one remains missing. The rescued four were reported to be wearing lifejackets.

The Coast Guard immediately launched a Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sea Otter and a Coast Guard Station San Diego 45-foot Response boat-medium crew to search for the fisherman. Additionally, crews from Customs and Border Protection, San Diego Mission Bay Lifeguards, San Diego Sheriff’s Department and San Diego Fire Department are searching for the missing man.

Some of the men were taken Scripps Memorial hospital, in La Jolla. Authorities have been unable to contact any of the men since their release from the hospital.

Currently, the Sea Otter and Jayhawk crews are actively searching the area for the fisherman.
