Coast Guard searching for missing father and son off Catalina Island

CATALINA ISLAND, Calif. — The Coast Guard is searching the waters off Catalina Island this morning, August 16, for Michael Silliman and his son Shaun, after their skiff was found partially submerged about one mile northwest of Goat Harbor, Catalina Island, Calif.

The Coast Guard received the report around 7:40 a.m. from Los Angeles County Lifeguards at Baywatch Isthmus of a partially submerged 10-foot skiff off the Coast of Catalina Island with no one on board.

The Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles – Long Beach Command Center used the vessel’s registration to contact a family member of Mr. Silliman. The family member informed the Coast Guard that the skiff belongs to the 43-foot sailing vessel Windwalker which departed from Newport Harbor to Catalina Island yesterday morning.

An HH-65 Helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles was launched to the area along with a 41-foot utility boat from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles. Assets from Baywatch Avalon, Baywatch Isthmus and Newport Harbor Patrol are also on scene assisting with the search.
