Coast Guard Searching for Missing Canoeist in Chesapeake Bay

BALTIMORE – The Coast Guard along with partnering agencies are responding to a report of a missing 26-year-old male in the Chesapeake Bay near Elm’s Beach in St. Mary’s County Saturday.

St. Mary’s County Fire Rescue contacted the Coast Guard at 6:18 p.m., reporting that a canoe with two people aboard capsized near Elm’s Beach.

A 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Coast Guard Station St. Inigoes, Md., a HH-65 Dolphin helicopter rescue crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., Maryland Natural Resources Police, a St. Mary’s County Fire Rescue boatcrew and a Maryland State Police helicopter are responding.

One of the two boaters were able to swim to shore. The search continues for the missing boater reportedly not wearing a life jacket.
