Coast Guard searching for missing boater

SANTA MONCIA, Calif. – Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach received a report at 3:40pm of a 30-foot sail boat that had ran aground on the beach one mile south of the Santa Monica Pier.

Air Station Los Angeles dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter. Baywatch Santa Monica also responded, arrived on scene and found no one aboard the vessel.

Sector Los Angeles issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB). After further investigation, Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach discovered that the sailing vessel departed Catalina Island at approximately 9:30 a.m. with a 55-year-old man on board.

Currently Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal, an Air Station Los Angeles MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and Baywatch Santa Monica are looking for the person last seen on the sailboat in the water. Also engaged in the search are Baywatch Redondo, Baywatch Malibu, LA County Sheriff, and other agencies.

Air Station Sacramento is preparing a C-130 to launch shortly and will conduct a search.
