Coast Guard Searching for Missing Boaster on Lake Erie

MONROE, Mich. — The Coast Guard is searching for a 64-year-old male from Wyandotte, Mich. today near Otter Creek, Ohio.

At approximately 11:05 a.m. today, the Coast Guard received a radio distress call over Channel 16 of from the 64-year-old man, who had entered the water from his boat to fix a fowled propeller.

His 80-year-old uncle attempted to toss him a float cushion as winds caused the boat to drift away. The uncle then called for assistance on the radio.

A Coast Guard Air Station Detroit HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter, a Coast Guard Station Toledo 25-foot response boat and 41-foot utility boat launched to search for the man, along with a helicopter, dive team, a surface asset from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and a boat from Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Coast Guard is actively searching for a man in the waters north of Toledo Beach, Ohio.

Coast Guard Sector Detroit directly oversees all Coast Guard missions from Alpena, Mich. to Vermilion, Ohio on Lake Huron, the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers, Lake St. Clair and Western Lake Erie.
