Coast Guard searching for missing 7-year-old boy

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard, along with the Texas City Police and Fire Departments, are searching for a 7-year-old boy who went missing while swimming on the north side of the Texas City Dike this afternoon.

A watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston received a phone call from a Texas City 911 operator at 2:52 p.m. requesting assistance in the search.

Coast Guard Air Station Houston launched a rescue helicopter and Station Galveston dispatched a rescue boat. Both arrived on scene around 3:20 p.m.

The boy was with a babysitter at the time and disappeared shortly after entering the water. He was near the end of the dike and about 12 feet away from shore when he disappeared.

Current water temperatures in the area are 79 F.
