Coast Guard searching for man overboard 97 miles south of Bethel, Alaska

17th Coast Guard District NewsKODIAK, Alaska – The Coast Guard is searching for a crewman reported overboard off a 24-foot fishing vessel near Goodnews Bay 97 miles south of Bethel Monday.

The 17th Coast Guard District command center watchstanders received a call at 10:04 a.m. from the Goodnews Bay clinic reporting the fisherman fell overboard wearing a green rain suit and no life jacket 60 feet from shore. The watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew to search for the overboard fisherman.

The Hercules crew arrived on scene at noon and the helicopter crew is expected to arrive on scene around 2 p.m.

There are also six fishing vessels in the area searching for the overboard fisherman.

Weather conditions in the search area are reportedly winds of 16 mph with three foot seas. The water temperature is reportedly 45 degrees Fahrenheit and an air temperature of 53 degrees Fahrenheit.
