Coast Guard searching for Connecticut man swept from sandbar

1st Coast Guard District NewsNEW YORK – The Coast Guard is searching for a man who was swept from a sandbar near Milford, Conn., Monday, July 4, 2011.

A 34-year-old man is missing after being swept off a sandbar joining Silver Sands Beach and Charles Island on the northern side of Long Island Sound.

A good Samaritan on a jet ski saw the man and his son fall in and responded immediately, transporting the child to safety. When he returned to rescue the father, he was nowhere to be seen. The missing man is reported to be 6-feet tall and wearing orange swim shorts.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station New Haven, Conn., a rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., marine units from the Stratford, Conn., Police Department, the Milford, Conn., Police Department and the Milford, Conn., Fire Department are searching for the missing man.
