Coast Guard searching for car in Merrimack River

BOSTON- The Coast Guard is currently searching for a white car that reportedly drove off the Amesbury Bridge into the Merrimack River around 8:15 p.m., Jan. 31, 2011.

The Coast Guard launched a 25-foot rescue boat and a 47-foot utility boat from Coast Guard Station Merrimack River and a rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod.

The 47-foot utility boat arrived on scene at around 8:43 p.m. The helicopter is en route from Cape Cod. The 25-foot rescue boat has departed Station Merrimack and is transporting a dive team to the scene of the accident.

The Amesbury Fire Department has an airboat on scene along with a Massachusetts State Police unit on the bridge.

It is unknown how many people are in the car.
