Coast Guard searching for a person near Governors Island

NEW YORK – The Coast Guard is searching for a person in the water off Governors Island, New York, Thursday evening.

The Coast Guard received a call from New York Vessel Traffic Service stating that multiple people witnessed a person jump off the Spirit of America ferry at approximately 10:15 p.m.

The ferry crew threw a life ring into the water and deployed their small boat.

Coast Guard Sector New York issued a Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) and launched a 29-foot Response Boat-small from Coast Guard Station New York.

Assisting with this search are NYPD and FDNY Marine units as well as one NYPD aviation unit.
