Coast Guard searching for 2 boaters near Bahamas

MIAMI — The Coast Guard is searching for two boaters Thursday near the Bahamas after they failed to return from their boating trip.

A family member called the Coast Guard Wednesday to report that Walfrido Gomez, 26, and Walter Pereira, age unknown, left Saturday from Haulover Marina in Miami in a white 33-foot center-console Avanti and were supposed to return sometime Sunday.

Search and rescue coordinators at the Seventh Coast Guard District in Miami launched an HU-25 Falcon jet crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami to search for the overdue boaters. The crews of the Coast Guard Cutter Forward and Coast Guard Cutter Thetis are also searching.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Gomez or Pereira are asked to call the Coast Guard at 305-415-6800.

The cutter Forward is a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth, Va.

The cutter Thetis is a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Key West, Fla.
