Coast Guard searches Lake Champlain for missing kayaker

BOSTON – Coast Guard air and boat crews are searching for a man whose kayak overturned in Lake Champlain, Vt., today, while kayaking with a friend in Missisquoi Bay.

Thomas Lapine, who managed to put on a life jacket in the water after the kayak overturned, was picked up by a good Samaritan at 2:30 p.m., and contacted the Coast Guard to report his friend, Philip Patch, was still missing from the overturned kayak.

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Burlington arrived in Missisquoi Bay at 4:30 p.m., and a helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., arrived on scene at 5:30 p.m., to begin their search.

Local fire and rescue crews began searching at 3:15 p.m., as well as a Customs and Border Protection helicopter crew.

“A severe thunder storm with 60-knot winds, hail and lightning halted the search for the evening,” said Petty Officer First Class Darrell Bresnaham, officer of the day at Station Burlington. “We’re going to search the shoreline at first light and hopefully bring a positive conclusion to this search.”

Neither man was wearing a life jacket when the kayak overturned.
