Coast Guard searches for possible person in water

SAN DIEGO – The U.S. Coast Guard is currently searching for a possible person in the water after receiving notification of an overturned kayak in Mission Bay Thursday morning.

A Good Samaritan noticed the adrift, overturned kayak, pulled it from the water, and notified the Lifeguards, who then notified the Joint Harbor Operations Center (JHOC) at about 11:00 a.m.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was launched from Coast Guard Sector San Diego, a small boat from Station San Diego and a Lifeguard boat to search for anyone who might have been in the kayak.

The kayak is a red Malabu, 12-foot, single person kayak that had fishing gear inside.

The Coast Guard would like to remind all mariners to please file a float plan letting a friend or family member know you are going on the water, where you plan on being and when you plan to return. It is also important to label your recreational equipment as you would all of your other marine equipment in the event that something might happen.

If anyone has any information, please contact the U.S. Coast Guard at 619.278.7031.
