Coast Guard searches for possible people in distress near Del Mar

SAN DIEGO – An aircrew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego is searching for anyone who could possibly be in distress after a sailboat mast was found nine miles west of Del Mar, Calif., Friday afternoon.

A boater alerted the Coast Guard and Oceanside Harbor Police to debris floating offshore at 12:50 p.m.

A police boat responded to the scene and discovered that the debris was the sail and mast of a sailboat.

A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter launched from Sector to search the area for anyone in distress.
