Coast Guard Searches for Missing Swimmer Off North Shore, Kauai

HONOLULU – The Coast Guard and the Kauai Fire Department today continue to search the waters and shoreline near Kilauea Point, Kauai, for a swimmer who was reported in distress Sunday evening.

The Coast Guard is searching an area about the size of Molokai for a missing man. Crewmembers of an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter searched throughout the night and continue to search today. A Coast Guard C-130 search plane and crew along with the Kauai Fire Department are conducting extensive search patterns that started early this morning.

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu launched an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Barbers Point after receiving the initial call at 7:05 p.m. from the Kauai Fire Department stating that three swimmers were in distress near Kilauea Point. Within an hour of the initial call Coast Guard rescue crews were on scene to assist the Kauai Fire Department with the search.

One of the swimmers was a Good Samaritan who tried to help two other swimmers and became in distress himself. The Kauai Fire Department recovered one female swimmer and the Good Samaritan who bravely tried to help. However rescuers were unable to help the 41-year-old man.
