Coast Guard Searches for Missing Swimmer in Vermont

BOSTON – The Coast Guard is searching Shelburne Bay, Vt., today for a man who disappeared while swimming to shore from a sailboat.

The crew aboard the sailing vessel Adagio called Coast Guard Station Burlington at about 4 p.m., when they lost sight of the 48-year-old man.

He was reported to be a good swimmer, but was not wearing a life jacket.

Station Burlington launched a boat crew that was joined by Colchester Fire Department, Charlotte Fire Department, Shelburne Fire Department as well as a small fleet of Good Samaritans aboard boats and jet skis.

“Even on a beautiful summer day like this, the danger of the open water is still present,” said Petty Officer Second Class Wayne Chandler, Station Burlington’s officer of the day. “We greatly appreciate the local support and ask all boaters to always use sound judgment and extreme caution while on the water.”
