BOSTON – The Coast Guard is searching the water near Winthrop Beach, Mass. today for a man who reportedly fell from a raft.
A witness on the beach contacted Winthrop Fire Department and claimed to have seen a man fall from a yellow inflatable raft and into the water at about 1 p.m. Later, an additional source reported the same. The reporting sources did not say whether or not the man was wearing a life jacket.
Once notified by the fire department, the Coast Guard launched a boat crew from Station Point Allerton and a rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod.
“The reporting source did the right thing by contacting the fire department,” said Lt. Duane Ripley, command duty officer at Sector Boston. He said the Coast Guard counts on the public to always report anything out of the ordinary to local authorities.
On scene winds are 15 knots, and waves are 2-3 feet. The water temperature is 66 degrees.
