Coast Guard Searches for Lost Fisherman

BOSTON – The Coast Guard is searching for a 37-year-old man who fell overboard from a Point Judith, R.I., based fishing vessel roughly 95 miles south of Montauk, N.Y., about 8:15 p.m. yesterday.

The crew of the Barbara Ann, a 76-foot fishing vessel, witnessed Victor Blanco fall overboard while he was setting fishing gear. He was not wearing a flotation device. The life ring the crew threw to him was out of his reach, and they saw him go under the water shortly after.

An HU-25 Falcon jet and an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, both from Air Station Cape Cod, launched about 8:20 p.m. to search. The Barbara Ann and its sister ship Mr. Marco have also been searching the area since Tuesday evening.

“The crew’s quick call for help enabled us to rapidly get our aircraft out to search together with the assisting fishing vessels,” said Lt. Cmdr. Kendall Garran.

The weather Tuesday night was reported to be 20 to 35 knot winds and eight to 10 foot seas.
