Coast Guard searches for boater after vessel capsizes near Colorado River

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Coast Guard crews are searching for a missing boater after the vessel he was on capsized Saturday offshore of the mouth of the Colorado River.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi received a report at approximately 10:30 a.m. from a good Samaritan who witnessed a 16-foot pleasure craft carrying four boaters without lifejackets on capsize.

An urgent marine information broadcast was issued and a Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was launched to the scene.

Two boaters were rescued by Matagorda County Sheriff officers. A third boater was later discovered deceased near the capsized vessel.

Air Station Corpus Christi aircrews, as well as boatcrews from Coast Guard Station Freeport, continue to search for the missing boater.

“We will continue to aggressively search throughout the night for the missing boater,” said Lt. Cmdr. Ariel Berrios, the search and rescue mission coordinator. “This is currently the top priority of Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi.”
