Coast Guard searches for 2 overdue fishermen in Mona Passage waters off Aguadilla, Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Coast Guard rescue crews are searching Friday for two overdue fishermen, missing since Wednesday, from a fishing trip in the Mona Passage to the fishing areas of Los Pichinchos, Los Rabos and Los Golfos.

The missing men are Jonathan Mendez Otero, 22, and Luis Millan Reyes, 22, residents of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

Coast Guard controllers in the Sector San Juan Joint Rescue Sub Center were initially contacted Thursday afternoon by a friend of the missing men, who reported that Mendez Otero and Millan Reyes were overdue after they had departed from Tamarindo Beach, Aguadilla, Puerto Rico aboard a 18-foot yellow and black fishing yola, and were expected to return at approximately 3 a.m. Thursday, but they never arrived.

Coast Guard rescue crews have been searching since Thursday for the overdue fishermen with HH-65 Dolphin helicopters from Air Station Borinquen, Aguadilla. So far, Coast Guard aircrews have conducted three searches spanning over 1,270 nautical square miles over waters west northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.
