Coast Guard search for boat driver to continue throughout night

BOSTON — The U.S. Coast Guard plans to continue the search for the 21-year-old East Falmouth, Mass., native near Popponesset Island, Mass., throughout the night, June 21, 2011.

The 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead from Woods Hole, Mass., has arrived on scene and will search throughout the night as needed. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Chatham may also join the search later.

Currently a Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod is also on scene, saturating nearly 50 square miles.

Crews from Coast Guard Station Woods Hole; the Coast Guard Auxiliary; Hyannis, Falmouth, and Massachusetts Marine Environmental Police; Popponesset Bay Fire Department; and Hyannis and Popponesset Bay harbormasters have searched throughout the day for the missing boater.

The Coast Guard does not plan to release the name at this time.

Crews began searching for the man after a Good Samaritan reported seeing a boat driving in circles with no one on board near Popponesset Island. The rescue crews are focusing their search efforts between Popponesset Bay and Waquoit Bay, Mass.
