ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.- The Coast Guard is continuing to search for a missing New Jersey man, John Glenn, this morning, extending the search to a multiple-state area.
Coast Guard crews throughout the Fifth Coast Guard District, which spans from New Jersey and Pennsylvania to North Carolina, have been directed to conduct extended communications, which involve physical surveys of marinas and wharfs, to look for signs of Glenn and his 24-foot pleasure craft, the White Whale. In addition, the Coast Guard is transmitting urgent marine information broadcasts (UMIBs) further up and down the East Coast, requesting that any mariners who may have information as to Glenn’s whereabouts contact the Coast Guard.
Glenn, 56, from Beesley’s Point, N.J., was reported overdue from a fishing trip just after noon on Sunday. He reportedly got underway by himself from Ocean City Marina in Ocean City, N.J., and was last seen refueling at Seaview Marina.
Immediately after being notified, the Coast Guard began broadcasting UMIBs in the area. An HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter crew was launched from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City at 1:50 p.m. Sunday. At 2:57 p.m., an HC-130 Hercules long-range aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., joined the search.
Throughout the night, the helicopter and airplane crews searched with the use of night-vision goggles and radar. They continued to search until Monday evening, completing nine sorties and searching an area of 22,524 square nautical miles.
