Coast Guard Saves Seven Near Waukegan

WAUKEGAN, Ill. — The Coast Guard saved seven people after their boat was taking on water approximately three miles off of Waukegan Harbor at approximately 11:30 a.m. today.

A Coast Guard Air Facility Waukegan HH65 Dolphin helicopter rescued 5 people from the water and a Coast Guard Station Kenosha 41-foot motor life boat rescued 2 people from the water after receiving a report of distress from the boaters.

One of the pilots of the Coast Guard helicopter said all of the boaters were wearing life-jackets, which aided in their rescue because it made them easier to see.

The helicopter crew transported the boaters to the Waukegan Airport where they were met by awaiting Emergency Medical Services. The 41-foot boat crew transported the two boaters to Waukegan Harbor and were also met by awaiting EMS. Both groups were taken to local hospitals.

The Coast Guard reminds boaters to wear a life-jacket to increase their chances of survival if put in a similar situation. The buoyancy of the life-jacket allows for a boater to stay afloat and the bright colors make it easier for boat and aircrews to spot them.
