Coast Guard, San Joaquin County Sheriff Search For Missing Boaters

TRACY, Calif. — The Coast Guard and the San Joaquin County Sheriffs Department are searching for four people reported missing after the boat they were on capsized early Sunday morning near the Tracy Oasis Marina.

At 12:55 a.m. the sheriffs department received the report of four Hispanic males in their late teens and early twenties missing after the 14-foot skiff they had been on capsized. At the time of the accident, there had been ten people on the vessel; six of who had swam to shore.

Shortly after 1 a.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received a call from the sheriffs department requesting assistance. An HH-65 dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco and a 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Rio Vista were dispatched to the scene. Both Coast Guard assets as well as a San Joaquin Sheriffs Department boat conducted extensive searches of the area throughout the night but were unable to locate the reported missing persons.

It was reported that the persons on the vessel had been drinking and that no one had a flotation device on at the time of the accident.

Shortly after 5 a.m. this morning the San Joaquin County Sheriffs Department reported taking the driver of the vessel into custody.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The Coast Guard strongly urges all boaters to wear an approved floatation device while on the water.
