MIAMI — The Coast Guard and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force medevaced a 20-year-old man suffering from reported decompression sickness aboard the 82-foot fishing vessel, First One approximately 41 miles west of Billy Island, Bahamas, Wednesday.

Coast Guard 7th District watchstanders received an agency assist request from the RBDF to assist in getting the patient to a decompression chamber at approximately 2:38 p.m. Watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to the scene with a Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew for air coverage.

The helicopter crew arrived on scene at approximately 5:28 p.m., hoisted the patient and transferred him to emergency medical services.

EMS transferred the patient to the Bahamas Hyperbaric Centre.
