Coast Guard, Rockport harbormaster respond to people in the water off Rockport

BOSTON — Coast Guard rescue crews, Rockport harbormaster responded Sunday afternoon to an overturned boat near Straitsmouth Island off Rockport.

At 1:20 p.m., the Coast Guard Sector Boston command center received a report of an overturned 20-foot boat and two people in the water.

A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, a rescue crew from Coast Guard Station Gloucester, and the Rockport harbormaster responded.

One person was recovered from the water by the harbormaster boat crew. Another person was able to get to shore and was later rescued by the Coast Guard helicopter crew.

Two Coast Guard crewmembers from Station Gloucester went aboard the harbormaster boat and rendered aid to the person recovered from the water. That person was reported to be in serious condition and was transported to local EMS for further care.
