Coast Guard returns 146 migrants to Haiti

MIAMI — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Legare returned 146 Haitian migrants to Cap Haitien, Haiti, Friday morning.

An HU-25 Falcon jet crew from Air Station Miami spotted an overloaded 50-foot motor vessel while on a routine patrol over the Caribbean Sea Wednesday evening.

The crews of the cutters Legare and Drummond arrived on scene and interdicted the vessel carrying 101 adult males and 45 adult females about 18 miles south of West Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands.

The migrants were safely transferred to the Legare and provided with food, water, shelter and any necessary medical care.

The cutter Drummond is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Miami.

The cutter Legare is a 270-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth, Va.
