Coast Guard Resumes Search for Missing Diver

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Coast Guard has resumed its search off the coast of Port Canaveral, Fla., after receiving new information, for a diver that went missing Saturday evening off the coast of Jupiter Inlet, Fla.

Coast Guard search and rescue crews resumed its search Tuesday morning off the coast of Port Canaveral for Nicole Cuomo, 32, of Rockledge, Fla., after suspending the search for her Monday. The search resumed after a privately contracted aircraft spotted a flotation device used in diving 28 miles northeast of Port Canaveral. The flotation device could have been used by the missing diver off Jupiter Inlet.

Cuomo was diving off a 26-foot boat when she failed to surface after 45 minutes Saturday. Howard Sorkin the boat’s operator, contacted the Coast Guard an hour after she failed to surface, to request assistance.

Coast Guard search and rescue crews have responded from the Southeastern United States and the Caribbean. An HH-60 helicopter from Air Station Clearwater, Fla., a C-130 fixed-wing aircraft from Air Station Clearwater, an HU-25 jet from Air Station Miami, a helicopter from Air Station Savannah, Ga., the 110-foot Cutter Chincoteague from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the 87-foot Cutter Kingfisher from Mayport, Fla., have searched for Cuomo off the coast of Port Canaveral. A search has also been conducted by an aircrew from Patrick Air Force Base in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

“Our cumulative search efforts using multiple fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Air Station Miami, Air Station Savannah, Patrick Air Force Base, as well as, the Coast Guard Cutter Kingfisher and Chincoteague are all focused on continuing the search effort for Cuomo to help bring her home safely,” said Lt. Christopher Douglas, command duty officer for the Seventh Coast Guard District.

A total of 3,400 square-miles have been searched off the coast of Port Canaveral. The search effort is being coordinated by search coordinators in Miami and Jacksonville, Fla.
