Coast Guard responds to vessel taking on water off Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The Coast Guard responded Friday to a report of a 16-foot vessel with two people on board taking on water approximately one mile off Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, Calif.

An MH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles, Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal, Vessel Assist, and Newport Harbor Patrol all responded to the call.

The vessel sank shortly before rescue assets arrived, leaving two people in the water, who were safely recovered by Newport Harbor Patrol.

Newport Harbor Patrol and Vessel Assist will refloat the vessel and tow it into Newport Harbor with the assistance of Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal.

No injuries and no pollution has been reported.
