HOUSTON, TX – The Coast Guard received a report of a fishing boat that was on fire about 55 miles south east of Freeport, Texas, this morning.
At about 9:50 a.m., a watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston received the mayday call and although initial information gathering was limited due to a language barrier, it was understood that one person was still on the burning boat.
Crews from Air Station Houston launched an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter and Air Station Corpus Christi launched an HU-25 Falcon jet to help. The Coast Guard aircraft monitored the burning boat while three other fishing vessels were fighting the fire. One of the responding fishing vessels was able to pull the survivor on board.
All four fishing boats involved in the case belong to Quality Seafood, out of Palacios, Texas.
