Coast Guard responds to vessel collision in Houston Ship Channel

Coast Guard 8th District NewsGALVESTON, Texas — The Coast Guard is responding to the report of a collision in the Houston Ship Channel, Tuesday.

Watchstanders at Sector Houston-Galveston received a report at 8:13 a.m., that the M/V Naticina and the barge MMI 3024, which was being pushed the by towing vessel Alliance, collided near Pelican Cut in the ship channel. The barge was carrying a cargo of 20,000 barrels of xylene. No pollution or injuries were reported from either vessel.

After the collision, the Naticina was instructed to transit to the Galveston Fairway Anchorage, where it safely anchored. The Naticina reported a breach in a starboard ballast tank. Inspectors, Port State Control examiners and investigating officers from Marine Safety Unit Texas City were dispatched to conduct damage surveys for the barge and Naticina.

The cause of this collision is under investigation.
