Coast Guard responds to vessel casualty on the Ohio River at Louisville, KY

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Coast Guard in Louisville, Ky. is currently responding to an allision that occurred this morning involving the towing vessel Helen Lay owned by Lay Leasing Inc.

This morning at approximately 3:50 a.m. the Coast Guard Captain of the Port Ohio Valley was notified that the towing vessel Helen Lay while transiting up river with 12 loaded coal barges in tow, lost steering and allided with the a concrete wall near Joes Crab Shack in Downtown Louisville damaging one of the coal barges.

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port Ohio Valley has closed the river between Ohio River mile markers 602 and 605 until a general inspection of the barge and initial investigation into the marine casualty can be completed.

The Coast Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers are continuing to monitor river conditions and work with involved industry to ensure safe navigation on the Ohio River. The Coast Guard is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of this accident.
