Coast Guard responds to suspicious activity in Industrial Canal, New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard, federal, state, and local agencies responded to suspicious activity in the Industrial Canal, New Orleans, Tuesday.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at approximately 9:45 p.m. from the motor vessel General Kelly of a suspicious raft floating in the industrial canal.

The sector temporarily closed a portion of the canal and local authorities temporarily closed the St. Claude Bridge to investigate the raft.

The Coast Guard responded in coordination with multiple federal, state, and local agencies to include the New Orleans Police Department Bomb Squad, Harbor Police Department, Coast Guard Station New Orleans, Federal Protective Services, and Coast Guard Investigation Services to maintain the safety and security of nearby communities.

The floating raft was deemed by authorities to be of no threat.
