Coast Guard responds to spill after boat sinks near Commercial Wharf in Boston

BOSTON — Coast Guard and Boston Fire Department crews are responding to a diesel spill near the Joe’s American Bar and Grill by Commercial Wharf in Boston, Wednesday.

The 20-foot recreational boat Last Chance called the Coast Guard using channel 16 on their VHF-FM radio to report they were taking on water.

The two people aboard the Last Chance were taken off the vessel by a Massachusetts State Police boat. Currently there are no reports of injuries.

The vessel has an estimated 40 gallons of diesel fuel on board and there is approximately a 20-foot sheen around the vessel. The leak has been secured but the amount of fuel in the water is unknown at this time. The vessel is now tied to a nearby pier.

A 25-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Boston is on scene providing a safety zone around the Last Chance. Two pollution investigators from Coast Guard Sector Boston are also on scene and working with the fire department to develop a plan for salvaging the vessel.

The cause of the incident is currently unknown.
