Coast Guard responds to sinking vessel off Amelia Island, 1 rescued, 1 deceased

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Coast Guard was notified at approximately 3 p.m. Monday that a vessel with two people aboard was taking on water about one-half-mile off the coast of Amelia Island, Fla.

Coast Guard watchstanders received a VHF radio mayday from a good Samaritan reporting the 36-foot vessel “Miss Alberta” was taking on water and capsizing.

A 47-foot small boat rescue crew from Coast Guard Station Mayport, Fla., deployed to assist the distressed mariners. Once on scene, Coast Guardsmen discovered that a good Samartian aboard the 31-foot vessel, Joe Bip, had retrieved one deceased person from the water and rescued the other.

Both crewmembers are being transferred to a boat ramp at Mayport where emergency medical personnel are awaiting their arrival.

Names of the deceased and rescued are being withheld pending next of kin notification.
