Coast Guard responds to report of plane crash

SAN DIEGO – The Coast Guard received a report from a Good Samaritan vessel this afternoon that they observed a plane crash into the water twenty five miles east of San Clemente Island.

Timeline:

  • At approximately 2:00 p.m. the Good Samaritan vessel notified the Coast Guard of a possible downed aircraft.
  • The Good Samaritan notified the Coast Guard they were traveling through a debris field that appeared to be pieces of an aircraft.
  • There are currently several aircraft and two Coast Guard boats responding to the report and attempting to locate the debris field.
  • There are no reports of overdue commercial or military aircraft. The Coast Guard is currently working with the FAA and Military Air Defense to determine if there is an aircraft missing.
