Coast Guard responds to pier collapse in Eastport, Maine

BOSTON – The Coast Guard is responding to a collapsed pier that caused one injury and property damage in Eastport, Maine, Thursday.

At about 2:20 a.m., the Washington County dispatch notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Eastport, Maine, that the end of the Eastport breakwall had fallen into the water.

The caretaker aboard the Ada C. Lore suffered a leg injury and the 77-foot schooner was damaged. The Eastport pilot boat is submerged, one unoccupied pickup truck is in the water, and a sheen was reported in the area.

Station Eastport crews are working with vessel captains to move vessels to a safe location. Also assisting are the Eastport Port Authority and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
