Coast Guard Responds to Oil Spill in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Coast Guard pollution investigators deployed Wednesday to a mystery oil spill in the Port of Yabucoa, after receiving a report from the National Response Center at 7:25 a.m. that an unknown amount and type of oil had been located in the water near the shoreline inside Yabucoa Bay.

Shell Yabucoa Facility personnel immediately activated their Facility Response Plan and, with the assistance of the Tug Spartan Service crew, cleaned the affected area. They deployed containment and absorbent boom and also utilized absorbent pads to collect approximately 20 gallons of oil, which had been spilled into the water within an area of approximately 200 feet by twenty feet.

Coast Guard pollution response personnel are currently investigating to find the responsible party and the origin of the contamination. This includes sampling potential sources from land and sea inside Yabucoa Bay and vessels, tugs and barges operating within the area.
