NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard is coordinating clean up efforts for an oil spill found approximately 75 miles south of Atchafalaya Bay, Monday.
Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Morgan City, La., received a report at approximately 4:09 p.m., July 25, 2009, from the National Response Center reporting that approximately 58,800 gallons of crude oil was released from an underwater pipeline.
Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Morgan City, La. and the Gulf Strike Team from Mobile, Ala. are responding to the spill.
The source of the spill has been secured and it is highly improbable to impact land.
The spill is being cleaned up through the use of surface skimming vessels and chemical dispersants.
The cause of the spill is under investigation.
