Coast Guard Responds to Missing Woman Swimmer

BOSTON – The Coast Guard searched Providence River today for a 56-year-old woman who vanished while swimming with her husband off Conimicut Point Beach, R.I.

The husband made a 911 call that was relayed to Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England at 5:30 p.m., that his wife was missing. The sector deployed a rescue-boat crew from Station Castle Hill, R.I., and a helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass.

Also searching were crews from the Warwick, R.I., Fire Department and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, who located the woman’s body at 6:22 p.m.

The Station Castle Hill boat crew recovered and transferred the body to awaiting EMS in Warwick.

“It’s very sad for us when a search and rescue case ends this way,” said Petty Officer First Class Yolanda Dean, Search and Rescue Controller. “We urge all boaters to use extreme caution on the water and remember that no matter how nice the weather is, it is always a dangerous environment,” she said.
